General Info Viticulture
Head of Laboratory: Associate Professor Katerina Biniari
The Laboratory of Viticulture belongs to the Crop Science Department of the Agricultural University of Athens (AUA). Its main mission is to provide education and training in the topics of Viticulture and Ampelography at undergraduate and post- graduate levels. Its educational topics include structure of the vine (morphology and anatomy), grapevine propagation, vineyard establishment, principles of pruning, training and supports for vines, physiology and ecology of the vine, cultural methods and techniques in the vineyard. Moreover, its activities include research in topics such as clonal selection in Greek grapevine cultivars, ampelographic description and classification of Greek grapevine cultivars, identification and genetic study of Greek grapevine cultivars with the use of biochemical and molecular methods, improved grapevines by cell – and tissue- culture, comparative study of new training systems, grapevine nutrition, study of the effect of soil organic matter on the grapevine, as well as the study of the qualitative and quantitative characters of the grapes, berries and must (sugars, total and individual acids, total and individual phenolics, total and individual anthocyanins, antioxidant capacity, and others) of grapevine cultivars cultivated in Greece.
The team of the Laboratory of Viticulture has been involved in many national and international research projects with main research objects the genetic study of the most important Greek grapevine cultivars with the use of ampelographic and molecular methods, the effect of fertilization, irrigation and training and pruning systems on the physiology, ecophysiology of the grapevine, the grape yield of various grapevine cultivars under vineyard conditions, the dormancy of latent buds and others.
The Laboratory of Viticulture is fully equipped with the appropriate scientific equipment and instruments for the proper execution of the various experiments. This equipment includes: Genetic Analyzer (Applied Biosystems), PCR DNA thermal cycler, gel electrophoresis, HPLC and UV/VIS spectrophotometer for the determination of qualitative and quantitative characters of grapevine cultivars, UV transilliminator, centrifuges, incubator chamber, pH-meters, thermometers, refrigerators 4 °C, deep freezers -20°C and -80°C, water baths, ice machine, boilers for sterilization of artificial nutrient substrates, precision scales, plant growth chamber with controlled environment and adjustable temperature-light-humidity.
