Course description:

 

1.   Introduction: historical survey, international situation, present situation in Greece, economic importance, possibilities.

2.   Low cover. General survey, construction techniques. Advantages and disadvantages.

3.   Plastic mulching. Introduction to cultivation techniques, results of application.

4.   The conventional greenhouse: microclimate and control of plant growth. The soil of the greenhouse, sterilisation, fertiliser application. Cultivation procedures.

5.   Greenhouse cultivation techniques for tomato, cucumber, pepper, aubergine, bean, melon, watermelon, marrow and lettuce. The physiology of fruit set and growth. Fruit-setting hormones. Cultivars and graft rootstocks. Harvest, selection, standardisation, packaging and marketing. Quality control and E.U. regulations.
